His father, who was a big admirer of the Chicago Bears, also encouraged him to start playing football.

Manuel saw the 1985 Super Bowl Championship when he was six years old and became an instant fan of William Perry and the sport in general.

Similarly, John Marquand, Marquand’s older brother, was a Florida State football player.

John’s football career was unfortunately cut short due to an automobile accident. John was in a coma for more than two weeks.

Marquand attended Miami Senior High School in Miami, Florida, and was a member of the Miami High Stingarees, a high school football team.

Early Years in the Game

Manuel was a senior safety for the Miami High Stingarees in high school.

Because of his amazing stats of 96 tackles, eight blocked passes, and nine interceptions, he was named to the Florida Class 6A All-State Team.

Marquand was also named All-America by PrepStar, SuperPre, and National Recruiting Advisor and was one of the best defensive backs in the country.

Manuel also played for the Florida Gators football team from 1998 to 2001 under coach Steve Spurrier after receiving an athletic scholarship at the University of Florida.

Marquand was also red-shirted as a true freshman in 1997 by the Gators’ coaching staff.

Manuel later played in all eleven regular-season games in 1998.

Manuel had two sacks, 118 tackles, one forced fumble, four defensive passes, and three interceptions as a sophomore in 1999.

Marquand also started two games as an outside linebacker and put in a strong showing as safety throughout the season.

Manuel led the squad in tackles thanks to his outstanding performance.

Furthermore, during his junior year in 2000, Marquand was a key role in helping his team secure a spot in the Sugar Bowl at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship.

Manual led the Florida Gators to a 10–2 record and a final No. 3 rating in both major polls in his senior year as a captain in 2001.

In addition, the squad won the Orange Bowl 56–23 over the Maryland Terrapins.

During his university career, Marquand appeared in 46 games, recording six interceptions, six fumble recoveries, 308 tackles, eight quarterback sacks, nine tackles, and twenty-two pass defenses.

Career in the NFL

Bengals of Cincinnati

After being picked by the Cincinnati Bengals, Marquand began his professional career.

During the sixth round, the Bengals selected him with the 181st overall pick.

He also played with the Bengals in the seasons 2002 and 2003.

Furthermore, Marquand made his NFL debut on September 15, 2002, against the Cleveland Browns.

Similarly, he was given the opportunity to start in a game against the Indianapolis Colts. While playing against the Colts, he had two tackles.

Furthermore, Marquand had eight tackles in thirteen games with one start for the Bengals during the 2003 season.

Manuel also had a total of five tackles on special teams. On September 5th, 2004, the Cincinnati Bengals waived Marquand from the team.

Seattle Seahawks

Marquand was claimed by the Seattle Seahawks on September 6th, 2004, after being discarded by the Bengals.

He appeared in 15 games for the Seahawks in his debut season, recording ten tackles, seven solo tackles, and nine special teams stop.

Marquand was also a member of the 2005 Seahawks team, who concluded the season with 13 victories and three losses.

Manuel set up a touchdown with a 32-yard interception return against the Carolina Panthers in the 2005 NFC Championship Game.

Furthermore, the Seahawks made it to Super Bowl XL, however, they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers 21–10.

Manuel began the Super Bowl as a free safety. Unfortunately, he injured his hip in the second quarter, and Etric Pruitt was brought in to fill in for him.

Carolina Panthers vs. Green Bay Packers

After watching Manuel’s Super Bowl performance, the Green Bay Packers signed him after his contract with the Seattle Seahawks expired.

On March 13th, 2006, the Packers signed him as an unrestricted free agent.

In addition, during Marquand’s one season with the Packers, he started all sixteen games, setting a career-best with 103 tackles and rising to fourth on the team’s depth chart.

One of Manuel’s most memorable moments with the Packers came when he intercepted a pass deflection from Ahmad Carroll and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown.

The game was against the Detroit Lions on September 24, 2006.

Furthermore, Marquand was released by the Green Bay Packers at the final preseason roster cuts on September 1st, 2007.

Manuel was signed by the Carolina Panthers on September 3rd, 2007. Thus, Marquand was a member of the Panthers for the 2007 season, appearing in sixteen games, two of which he started.

Detroit Lions vs. Denver Broncos

Manuel was also signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Denver Broncos on March 8, 2008, after a season with the Panthers.

During the 2008 season, Marquand played for the Broncos.

As a result, he appeared in all 16 regular-season games for the Denver Broncos, starting 14 of them. Manuel had eighty-three tackles and four blocked passes.

Marquand was also signed as a free agent by the Lions on June 2nd, 2009. Before retirement, he spent his final season with the Lions.

During his time with the Detroit Lions, Manuel appeared in nine games and started six of them.

Manuel, meanwhile, had 36 tackles in 2009 and was released by the Lions on August 4th, 2010.

Coaching as a profession

Manuel returned to the Seattle Seahawks as an assistant special teams coach after retiring.

On February 14th, 2012, the Seahawks made the announcement. Marquand became the defensive assistant coach after a year with the Seahawks.

Following his promotion, he aided the Seahawks in their Super Bowl XLVIII victory.

Manuel was also promoted to assistant secondary coach by the Seahawks in 2014, and he helped the team reach Super Bowl XLIX.

Marquand was also hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their defensive backs coach in 2015.

Marquand was interviewed for the role of defensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2016 offseason, but he was not hired.

Marquand and the Falcons made it to Super Bowl LI in 2016, however, they were defeated by the New England Patriots on February 5th, 2017.

The Falcons elevated Manuel to defensive coordinator on February 10th, 2017.

However, after the Atlanta Falcons ended the season with seven wins and nine losses, Marquand was fired by the team on December 31st, 2018.
