Professional Career
Darby co-hosts the cryptozoology podcast The Cryptid Factor alongside Dan Schreiber, David Farrier, and producer Leon ‘Buttons’ Kirkbeck.
These four discuss animals that have yet to be proven by science, such as the Mongolian Death Worm, Chupacabra, Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster, passionately (and often awkwardly).
They take pseudo-science as seriously as they can, but they find it difficult to take themselves seriously at all.
Darby also won the 2012 Fred (Dagg) award for best New Zealand show at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.
He is also known for playing Murray Hewitt, the band manager of Flight of the Conchords on television, a role he first played in the BBC radio series under the name Brian Nesbit, and the boss of Jim Carrey’s character in Yes Man.
Darby portrayed Guy Mann in the third episode (“Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster”) of season 10 of The X-Files in February 2016.
He was ecstatic about his experience on set as a long-time fan of the show. Darby saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and promised to return to the set the next chance he got.
He also played a fictional version of Stede Bonnet in the HBO show “Our Flag Means Death” in 2022.
Darby’s co-star in the show is Taika Waititi, who plays Blackbeard, a frequent collaborator of Darby’s.
“Our Flag Means Death” received praise for its non-binary and LGBTQ representation, thanks in part to Waititi and Darby’s romantic relationship.
