Professional Career
Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius is a hip-hop duo with an electronic beat and lyrics that are sung, spoken, and rapped.
Angles, the pair’s critically acclaimed debut album, was one of the top independent releases of 2008.
Scroobius and Dan’s paths barely crossed apart from growing up in the same Essex town, Stanford-le-Hope, until they shared a Christmas season while working at the Lakeside branch of HMV.
Dan went on to book Scroobius for a show he was promoting at Reading’s Fez Club (now Sakura). Dan began remixing Scroobius’ debut solo album, No Commercial Breaks, around this time.
Their first collaboration resulted in “Thou Shalt Always Kill,” a song. The song was both a critique of modern British culture and a rallying cry for individualism.
“Thou Shalt Always Kill” piqued the interest of XFM’s John Kennedy, who aired it in demo form 24 hours after receiving the CD-R.
Scroobius created a MySpace page for the lone trace. The response was extremely positive. Scroobius and Dan both borrowed £200 to create the music video.
They turned down major label offers and instead signed with the independent Sunday Best Recordings for their UK releases and Strange Famous Records for their US releases.
So far, the electronic beat has released three albums. Angles was released in 2008, The Logic of Chance was released in 2010, and Repent Replenish Repeat was released in 2013.
Since March 2007, the duo has performed on numerous UK, US, and European tours.
In addition, they have performed at numerous festivals including Fuji Rock Festival, Pukkelpop, Lowlands, Reading and Leeds, Coachella, Bestival, and Glastonbury.
His stuttering began when he was four or five years old. Scroobius revealed on BBC News in May 2015 that his stutter has helped him become a better rapper.
Scroobius, 40, is well aware of the apparent irony of his chosen medium. “It wasn’t until we started doing the radio show that I realized, ‘They’ve given a radio show to a guy with a stutter,'” he says.
Scroobius currently runs his own record label, Speech Development Records. In the late 2000s, he hosted the award-winning weekly radio show The Beatdown on XFM.
Scroobius published Distraction Pieces in August 2016. He played French Bill, an assistant to Atticus, in the eight-part historical fiction series Taboo, which aired on BBC One and FX in 2017.
