His lab’s goal is to better understand the replication and pathogenesis of small RNA animal viruses in Picornaviruses. A virus’s reproductive cycle begins with attachment to and entry into the cytoplasm of a cell.
The protein that mediates this process is CD155 (poliovirus receptor, PVR), a cell surface protein identified by Vincent’s lab.
Understanding how the interaction between virus and cell alters the viral particle and how the interaction facilitates virus entry has aided in understanding how poliovirus infection is initiated.
Amy Rosenfeld received her Ph.D. in virology from Vincent’s laboratory at Columbia University.
While there, she established a genetic screen to identify the cellular proteins required for hepatitis C virus mRNA translation.
Amy returned to Vincent’s laboratory in 2014 to begin studies on enterovirus D68, building on the laboratory’s expertise in picornavirus research, in order to identify the cellular receptor for virus attachment and cell entry.
Principles of Virology, a textbook on virology, is co-authored by him.
