In season 4, as she struggles with guilt, grief, and relief over the death of her stepbrother Billy, she becomes an ideal target for Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
Vecna is the main antagonist of the supernatural drama who lives in Upside Down and preys on children who have suffered from past traumas.
Vecna enters their minds through their painful thoughts before murdering them.
Mayfield was marked by Vecna early on because of her traumas. But, with the help of Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill (Deal with God),” she was able to get the villain out of her head.
However, in Stranger Things 4 Vol 2, Mayfield decides to be captured by Vecna once more after determining that it is the only way he can be defeated.
But she has a few tricks up her sleeve this time.
Unfortunately, they are ineffective, leaving her with broken bones and blindness.
She was dead for a few minutes before being rescued by one of her best friends, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
This, however, only meant that her heart was beating. Mayfield was still severely injured by Vecna and was hospitalized.
To answer the question, yes, Mayfield died. Technically, she did, albeit briefly.
According to Mayfield’s ex-boyfriend, Lucas Sinclair, the medical staff stated that Mayfield’s heart stopped for more than a minute before restarting.
What will become of Max Mayfield?
There are several hypotheses about this. Mayfield may have survived, but the injuries she sustained were severe.
As a result, there is no guarantee that she will return to her former self.
Likewise, it is unknown whether she will ever awaken from her coma.
The show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers, spoke with Deadline about Mayfield’s future.
She was “brain dead, blind, and all of her bones are broken,” they said.
Sink, on the other hand, is completely unaware of what will happen to her character.
“With season five being the final season, I don’t know what they have planned,” she said in an interview with Deadline.
She does, however, believe that her character will survive. “I think she’s at a point now where she really wants to fight,” she told Variety.
“If she’s still out there,” she continued, “she definitely has a lot of rage and a lot of fight in her.”
But one thing is certain: Mayfield will play an important role in Season 5. Her fate will essentially determine the group’s dynamic.

A fan took to Reddit after discovering Sinclair was reading aloud from The Talisman, a classic book by Stephen King and Peter Straub.
The Talisman follows Jack, a 12-year-old boy who embarks on a perilous journey to a distant realm known as The Territories in order to save his dying mother.
The Talisman and Stranger Things are similar, according to user JCrazzee. The protagonist of The Talisman is a young boy whose mother is dying.
He can only save her by leaving our world to complete a mission and find an amulet in a fantasy setting that can save her life.
This is similar to Stranger Things, but it is full of monsters.
This could simply be a nod to King, whose works such as Carrie, IT, and Stand By Me have heavily influenced the show.
But, given the nature of the show, you never know what might happen.
Stranger Things Season 5 will undoubtedly end with a bang, as it will be the final season.
