However, the film is inspired by real-life events that the two primary actors/writers/producers observed as children in Oakland.
Diggs stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2018 that it was crucial for him and Casal — boyhood best friends — to make a film about their community.
“It’s a location that’s so vibrant, with such an interesting perspective weaved within its past.”
“It is such an intellectual hotbed, the origin of the Black Panther Party… all of these things are in the DNA of the place, and if you pay attention to it, it comes through in everyday life,” he concluded. But I’d never seen it depicted on film.”
Furthermore, the writers wished to present to the audience various and previously overlooked aspects of their hometown.
“A lot of times when people do site-specific films about different areas, […] the ideas will capture it but make it universal and retain the flavor of the place but don’t go too far,” Casal explained.
Diggs and Casal wanted to make everything as realistic as possible, so they took filmmaker Estrada on a field trip to Oakland and showed him their neighborhood, hangout areas, and other locations that no longer exist.
“I understood the concept of gentrification, but witnessing it through their eyes was an entirely different narrative,” Estrada remarked in the same interview.
