In the prior 74-year history of the Emmys, both lead actress in a comedy
and writing for a comedy series had only one Black woman winner each
Isabel Sanford in 1981 for her legendary portrayal as Louise in CBS’ The Jeffersons and Lena Waithe in 2017 for Netflix’s Master of None.

Brunson confirmed her engagement to Anik in the summer of 2020,
when some of her admirers found out she was in a relationship.
“More fantastic news,” she captioned an Instagram image dated July 30, 2020,
which featured her smiling face and engagement ring.
The “good news” tagline alluded to an earlier announcement that
A Black Lady Sketch Show had been nominated for an Emmy.
Brunson and Anik married in an intimate ceremony in September 2021, surrounded by their family and closest friends.
Unfortunately, the engagement announcement photo is the sole public
post regarding their relationship, and Brunson hasn’t yet shared any wedding photos with her fans.
