Why Was Chris Brown’s Michael Jackson Tribute Canceled at the AMAs?
Chris Brown, the ‘Under The Influence’ singer, was the focus of several dramatic events at the 2022 American Music Awards (AMAs).
Chris Brown claimed that the AMAs canceled his scheduled performance in honor of Michael Jackson’s Thriller’s 40th anniversary.
On Saturday, November 19, the singer posted a video on Instagram of himself and backup dancers practicing his song ‘Under The Influence,’ before switching to Michael Jackson’s smash hit ‘Beat It.’
The R&B singer captioned the post, “U SERIOUS.” When fans bombarded him with questions, he clarified what he was saying in the comments section.
“WOULDVE been the ama performance but they cancelled me for reasons unknown,” the singer wrote.
On November 21, a representative for Dick Clark Productions (DCP) told Entertainment Tonight that Chris Brown was not to blame for the tribute’s cancellation and that it was a matter of creative direction.
“Live shows change all the time, it’s the nature of the business; unfortunately, this element of the AMAs didn’t come together because we couldn’t align on the performance, through no fault of Chris,” the statement said.
Ciara joined the discussion on Monday, November 21, and hinted that she would also be performing for the tribute by sharing a video of herself working on Thriller choreography in the same rehearsal area as Brown.
Later, an insider told Entertainment Tonight that Ciara would be joining Brown onstage for a tribute to Thriller’s artist.
Many fans were upset and disappointed, with one saying, “So pissed that award shows never let him perform.” When it comes to dancing, he’s on par with Michael Jackson.”

“This is cancel culture, right?” said another irate fan. So why aren’t we canceling the AMAs because we tried to cancel Breezy??? Nobody can do it like this man.”
The ‘Loyal’ singer won an award at the 2022 AMAs, drawing boos from the audience and a statement of support from presenter Kelly Rowland.
The 33-year-old singer beat out Brent Faiyaz, Giveon, Lucky Daye, and The Weeknd for favorite male R&B artist, though he was not present to accept the award.
The audience applauded as Rowland announced Brown as the category winner, but there was also audible booing.
The performer has a lengthy legal history, including multiple arrests for assault and denials of rape allegations.
Rowland stated that she would accept the award on his behalf because he was unable to attend the event, and she raised a finger to silence the booing crowd, saying, “Excuse me, chill out.”
“I want to tell Chris to thank you so much for making great R&B music, and I want to tell him thank you for being an incredible performer,” she added. I’ll accept this award and bring it to you. “I adore you.”
