Looking back on the couple’s love story, they first met after Sandra left her post-college hedge fund job to work as a sales trader in her hometown of Chicago.

“I knew she was the girl I was going to marry right then.”
Sandra joined the company a few weeks later. Conolly left the firm to start his own company.
For their first date, the couple went to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Sandra brought her cousins, mother, and stepfather on their second date to the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Furthermore, because John worked as a sailor at the same time, Smith was able to go on several sailing dates with her then-boyfriend. She stated,
“At the time, he was also a very competitive sailor, and he took me sailing on several of our first dates.” He was testing me; I wasn’t sailing or going to art shows when I met him.”
The couple also has a significant age gap, but it never bothered them. Smith told the Chicago Tribune,
“Of course, I did some research on him when we first started dating; everyone does.” He hadn’t done much dating.
That was beneficial to me. He gained all of these other experiences, such as traveling and working. I doubt I would have gotten everything out of John Conolly if I hadn’t met him at that point in his life.”

They were victims of a long-distance relationship
They were in a long-distance relationship for a while after their wedding in 2010.
